Introduction to South Dakota GIS

Who should attend?
The typical student in this class should have a basic familiarity with what GIS is and the software the state uses to do GIS work (ESRI ArcGIS). Students won’t need to have any programming skills to benefit from this class.

This class is meant to introduce version 9.2 of ArcGIS ArcView

The main sections of the class will be:
  1. Introduction to ArcGIS
  2. Introduction to ArcCatalog
  3. Introduction to ArcMap
  4. Introduction to Coordinate Systems
  5. Working with ArcMap
  6. Symbolizing Features
  7. Selecting Features
  8. Labeling Features
  9. Introduction to Layerfiles
  10. Creating Map Layouts

Students of this class will learn about:

  • How to connect to and add data from various sources
  • How to symbolize, select and label features
  • Layerfiles and how they can be used to save time in map development

This Class is meant to teach users the basics of creating and editing data with ArcView. The main sections of the class will be:

The typical student in this class should have a basic familiarity with what GIS is and the software the state uses to do GIS work (ESRI ArcGIS). Students won’t need to have any programming skills to benefit from this class.


This class is meant to introduce several custom GIS tools that are available for use in ArcGIS. The main sections of the class will be:

  1. Getting familiar with the GIS tools
  2. Customizing ArcMap toolbars and buttons
  3. UN-installing the GIS tools
  4. ArcToolbox
Getting Familiar with the GIS tools:
  • What GIS tools are available?
  • How to install the tools
  • Using the GIS tools in ArcMap
Customizing ArcMap Toolbars and Buttons:
  • The Customize window in more detail
  • Adding existing tools and buttons from the Customize window
  • Removing buttons or tools from the toolbars
  • Add from file – adding other extensions
UN-installing Extensions:
  • A look at the tool which uninstalls the GIS tools
  • How to uninstall the tools 
ArcToolbox:
  • Getting familiar with the tools that are available in ArcToolbox
  • Identifying the common tools
  • Creating your own custom toolbox with commonly used tools
